Republican Moral Majority Shows Its True Colors At McCain Town Hall

By Che

You can disagree with someone’s politics all you want, but to not feel sympathy for a woman whose child was denied medical care for multiple sclerosis because it was a pre-existing condition, is twisted. At best, there was a smattering of cheers to the woman’s statement that this country is better than that..

The ironic part of this, is that this woman is a Republican. Just before her statement about her daughter’s illness, she said to Senator McCain:

I too want to thank you for coming today, and I thank you for looking to the “right” instead of always to the “left.”

Now as for the right’s disdain for illegal immigrants. This is why I have never been a big fan of jingoistic nationalism. It emphasizes our superficial differences, rather than seeing every person as a human being.

From the audiences’ standing ovation to the idea of excluding illegal immigrants from medical care, I can only assume that they would take it as far as withholding emergency treatment from an illegal immigrant, because the cost would negatively affect American citizens.

Many of you may think that it is a leap to say that these people would advocate for withholding emergency care from an illegal immigrant. If you feel that way, please explain how you can come to any other conclusion after witnessing the crowd’s reaction to the woman’s comments during the town hall?

Remember, the rest of the world is watching, and these people are, by default, quickly becoming our ambassadors.

Why can’t we call these people what they really are? “The Immoral Minority.”

I think I watched that entire town hall yesterday. I just couldn’t get myself to turn off the crazies.

What a disgusting display of “compassionate conservatism”. God forbid we should give care to any human being who is not a “true” American. By those standards, the Rethugs would deny care to all Democrats. Sad.

Re: the illegal immigrant healthcare issue – we should all hope that there isn’t a 1918-style flu outbreak, as our system will ensure that more Americans die. Think about it; the existing system works very hard to deny care to the populations who would most need it in that situation: the working poor, combined with immigrants. Many people in that situation likely won’t seek care (either out of poverty or fear of being deported) – and many work in service jobs. Every other country will be throwing open the doors of their hospitals, and we’ll be trying our hardest to keep them shut.
